Premier League Clubs Get Closer To Bookmaker Sponsorship Ban

The front of the shirts of Premier League clubs will no longer feature logos from bookmakers once an agreement is reached. The deal would prohibit front-of-shirt branding but permit sleeve sponsorship, so betting adverts on shirts would not completely disappear.

A recent shareholders' meeting included this topic as one of the main priorities. Clubs are willing to endorse this idea in order to prevent the government from passing legislation that outright forbids betting sponsorship on shirts.

When Will The Decision Be Finalised?

A final, definitive vote on the topic, though, could be pushed until the Premier League's summer conference in June, despite the general assumption that the vast majority of clubs would approve the plan as long as a three-year transition time is allowed.

Although Premier League clubs consider this to be a serious issue, it is generally accepted that EFL teams will not be required to follow the same procedures due to the negative economic effects it would have.

Eight Premier League teams have bookmakers as their primary front-of-shirt sponsors out of the league's 20 teams. For example, as our Sportsbet.io review shows, Southampton is one of the clubs that can be strongly affected by the move.

Finally, while some insiders in the league claim that front-of-shirt deals are frequently the ones that net clubs the most money, it is interesting to point out that none of the major six clubs have any such contracts.
