The Regional Council of Darmstadt in Germany has awarded its first 15 betting licenses with immediate effect. Among the renowned operators that now hold an official betting license in Germany are: GVC Holdings with four of its brands (Bwin, Ladbrokes, Sportingbet and Gamebookers), Tipwin Ltd, Hillside (Bet365) and Greenvest Betting (NEO.bet). Other names are: Tipin, Trinity Bet Operations, Tipico, Jaxx, I.B.C Sportsbetting, Cashpoint, BV and Admiral Sportwetten.
Bookies to Comply with German Law
The allocated licenses enable each operator to offer betting products to players across Germany. The actual terms of every given license are yet to be formally agreed upon, outlining the implementation plan that is to be in place in the early part of 2021.
The general upper betting limit for each player is set at €1.000 per month. This according to information could vary, depending on the negotiations of every betting company upon the license allocation. GVC, for instance, announced on the 12th of October that the stake limit on its brands can be increased up to €10.000, depending on certain criteria. Moreover, there might be a further rise of up to €30.000 for only 1% of its players; but once again under strict conditions.
GVC’s CEO, Shay Segev, expressed his contentment with the implementation of the transitional framework (starting on October 15) in the German betting landscape. He also stated that the long-awaited regulation of online betting will strengthen and consolidate his company’s position in a more transparent market for both players and bookmakers.

No introduction is needed for Bwin. They were the first betting giants, being founded in 1999 when they came to the spotlight as Bet And Win. Since 2016, they have been under new ownership - Entain Plc - and have a clear white market strategy, acquiring domestic licenses in New Jersey, Sweden, Italy, Greece, France, and Spain. Bwin is regarded as a top-class bookmaker, but there are some massive pros and cons. The website is a little bit outdated, and the odds should be higher, especially in the top leagues. The absence of Asian bets and the slow withdrawal times are also a great minus. The same applies to the fast limitation on winning accounts, no matter if we are talking about a sharp or a recreational player. On the other hand, the live betting section comes with so many extra features, like Multiview and live streaming. The range of extra bets, both at the pre-match and live betting, sports and payment methods is huge, and the mobile apps are magnificent. No matter the disadvantages, Bwin will always be a safe place and a classic destination for the bettors.
