End Of The Cross Product Era In The UK Gambling Scene

Feb 13, 2026

Updated on: Jun 16, 2026

  • No more cross-rewards with casino free spins for betting on sports.
  • Multi-product players are worth x2.5 more to UK betting sites.
  • The restrictions may make offshore sites more attractive to some players.
End Of The Cross Product Era In The UK Gambling Scene

The UK gambling landscape changed once more on 19 January 2026. The Gambling Commission (UKGC) officially banned "mixed-product promotions". This means that the classic "Bet ÂŁ10 on football, get 50 Free Spins" offer is now illegal in the UK.

The reason behind this decision is simple: the regulator wants to stop cross-selling. This occurs when an operator tries to move a sports bettor over to casino games, or vice versa. From now on, sports rewards must stay in sports, and casino rewards must stay in the casino.

What Do The Numbers Show?

This decision is a massive blow to the business model of UK giants. According to the UKGC’s own data, roughly 35% of all sports bettors regularly play casino games. Industry numbers show that "multi-product" players are the most valuable assets for operators.

A fan who plays both sports and casino games has a Customer Lifetime Value (CLV) that is x2.5 higher than someone who only bets on sports. They also tend to stay with a brand 30% longer.

Why The Change?

The UKGC is removing the industry's most successful way to keep customers happy and active. The regulator argues that data shows that people who jump from a football bet to a slot machine are more likely to develop problems.

By keeping these activities separate, the Commission aims to remove the trigger that can lead sports bettors into more intense games. However, for the bookmakers, this is a significant challenge. They have long used these mixed offers to keep people busy when there aren't many big games on. Now, they have to find new ways to keep the punter’s attention.

How Will This Affect The Betting Experience?

For many bettors, this feels like a loss. Most fans saw these mixed rewards as a nice "extra" for their loyalty. It gave them the opportunity to try something new on the site without additional cost.

Now, if one enjoys both sports and casino games, they’ll have to work twice as hard. The punter won’t be able to earn rewards for both at the same time. This added friction is exactly what the regulator wants. The idea is to slow things down, but it also makes the UK’s legal sites feel less rewarding than they once did.

Will There Be Other Options?

The UKGC wants to make gambling safer, but there’s a big danger. The UK betting landscape may become “too safe, less fun”. Then the offshore brands come in. The international sites are not obliged to follow the January 19 rules.

They still offer massive, unrestricted "mix and match" bonuses that include sports, casino, and poker all in one go. By over-regulating the local market, the UKGC risks driving the most active bettors away from local sites.
