Upcoming Tax Rise In The UK Betting Industry

Oct 8, 2025

Updated on: Jun 16, 2026

Not a question of “if”, but “how much”! In less than a month, the UK government will have to make a crucial decision for the iGaming industry: what will be the tax percentage that UK bookmakers will have to contribute to generate additional revenue to fund welfare programs?

Upcoming Tax Rise In The UK Betting Industry

How Much Is The Projected Gambling Tax Rise?

The tax raise is sure, although in politics, no one can ever be 100% certain. Chancellor Rachel Reeves faces growing pressure to raise the gambling tax, with the remote gaming duty potentially increasing from 15% to 25%. The rise may also reach 50%, from 21% today, for slot and gaming machines.

Reeves already warned the UK betting industry, commenting a few days ago that “there’s a case for gambling firms paying more”. The government believes that companies “should pay their fair share of taxes,” while the Institute for Public Policy Research estimates that the changes could raise £3.2 billion for welfare programs, such as the removal of the two-child benefit cap.

Were There Any Reactions To The Potential Tax Increase?

The government is aware, however, that a rise in gambling tax will have side effects and implications. The betting companies are concerned, and some have already reacted louder than others.

The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) made the unprecedented decision to go on strike in protest. The strike perhaps had some impact, as Labour MPs sent a letter to Reeves urging an increase in gambling taxes, but not on horse racing.

What can be the implications for sportsbooks?

From the betting companies’ perspective, Entain's CEO Stella David warned that “there will be consequences, especially for the betting shops which will become unviable”. She added that “there are other markets we have to pivot to as being more worthy of investment”.

David noted that the company paid £513 million in taxes last year and ranks among the UK’s top 20 taxpayers. The Betting and Gaming Council said the wider sector contributes £4 billion in taxes annually, along with £350 million to horse racing, £40 million to football, and more than £12.5 million to sports such as snooker, darts and rugby league.

What Do The Contradicting Opinions Highlight?

Analysts have questioned the financial assumptions and argue that the expected revenue may not materialize as anticipated, especially if gambling companies reduce their staff and the betting sector in the UK contracts.

Critics also warn that it will stifle the economy and increase offshore betting. There are also conflicting voices that argue the additional revenue can address a range of problems.
