What does over under mean in betting | Οver and under betting strategy

over underThe over/under bet is the most popular of the so-called “special” bet types, apart from those associated with the final result of a sporting event. This particular bet is a wager, in which the online bookmaker will set a number for the goals in a specific event (usually the combined score of both teams) and punters try to predict whether the goals will or will not surpass this number. In football the most popular number for over/under is 2.5 goals, meaning that if the match goals exceed this number the “over” wins and if the goals range from zero to two, the “under” option wins.

    Where to find over/under bets

The over/under bet is so popular because it can basically be offered on virtually every sport. In football there are over/under bets for teams and players goals, corners or cards. In basketball there are under/over bets for teams and individual player points, rebounds, assists, blocks, steals. In tennis there are bets about games, sets or break points. In American sports (football, baseball) various wagers about rushing yards, down conversions, interceptions, home runs and RBIs are offered.

Over/under bets can be of various types, for example: Over/under 1.5, Over/Under 2.5, Over/under 3.5, etc. Additionally there can be bets even on Over/under 1.5 in the first or second half, in the first basketball period etc.

This bet is considered really suitable for punters, especially those who enjoy football betting. In the initial type (over/under 2.5 goals) there is no draw possibility, as you will either win or lose your stake at the end of 90 minute time. You have a 50% chance to win the bet, instead of the theoretical 33.3% in a 3-way football wager. There’s no time prolongation (extra-time, penalties) for this type of bet.

There are various types of over/under bets, though. In some of them even a draw (you take your money back) is an outcome. For example, some online bookmakers offer an over/under 2 goals bet. With this type of play, the “under” bet is considered a winning one if the number of goals scored is equal to 0 or 1. If the number of goals scored is equal to 2 (for example the match ends 2-0, 0-2 or 1-1) your bet will be completely reimbursed, but you will not win any added money. In the same manner, if the number of goals is higher than 2 (3 or more), the “over” bet wins.

There’s also the more complicated over/under 2.25 bet. To better comprehend it, you can think it as placing two bets, one on over/under 2 and another on over/under 2.5. When betting on an under 2.25 on a football match means:

    • If the match ends with less than 2 goals (none or one) the bet is won entirely

    • If the match ends with exactly 2 goals, half of the sum will be given back to you, while the other half will be won, multiplied accordingly with the odds.

    • If the match ends with 3 or more goals, you lose your bet entirely.

On the contrary, an over 2.25 bet placed on a match were less than two goals were scored, will be entirely lost. In case more than 3 goals are scored the bet is won and if the match has exactly 2 goals, half of the sum will be reimbursed and the other half lost. Energybet offers some of the best odds on this market.

    Pick the right matches

There is no specific betting strategy to get a winning margin through over/under bets. Punters tend to analyze basic match stats (goals/points totals and averages, recent form results, head-to-head results). A glance at the injury list of both teams is considered acceptable too, especially when confirming that all strikers – and potential scorers – are available. There are some facts which are not seen at first sight, though.

To get a straight idea of a team’s ability to score, a punter has to look somewhat deeper than last week’s match or even five last ties. When a bookie looks at a team’s  scoring form, his research is over the last 20 matches, or even longer. Of course, it depends on the sport, the league, the total number of the games played and the frequency of consecutive games. Recent form should always be taken into account but if you look just on a recent streak of high or low scoring matches looks like the wrong way of analyzing.

    Think like a pro

Professional punters tend to analyze all scores individually and not averages. The average number could show the real picture when analyzing a particularly large sample size with scorelines of limited variance. But the problem is that even over a sample size of for example 15 matches, one irregular result can distort the average.

So while averages can be helpful in large sample sizes, in general, it’s best to track single occurrences. Look at how many times a team has gone over or under a particular goal total, as this allows for more accurate conclusions. Even if the average total goals of a team are 3 per match, the occurrence rate could be low.

    What to avoid

Some punters tend not to consider specific games, especially at the beginning of a new season. Last season’s statistics can be misleading, because of (frequent) squad changes during off-season. It’s easier to count recent games as having greater value than games played in the start of the season. For example, you could count a number of previous matches as having twice the significance of the last matches.

Placing a bet to a higher limit than the average one offered by the online bookmaker could be tempting, as the odds get higher. For example, betting on an over 4.5 goals could have odds as high as 5,00 or even more, where the “ordinary” over 2.5 goals is offered on even odds. Concentrating on “even money” over/under lines (approaching 2,00)  will offer more consistency to your results.

Why time spent, is not time wasted

You’re also strongly advised to look at some more detailed stats. Simple goals and scorelines do not always tell the truth. Try to develop an analysis that incorporates statistical categories that can give a better indication of a team’s base form and their true scoring potential. You shoud analyze specific numbers (shots on goal, shots on target, goal per shot conversion rates).

The majority of players usually only considers scorelines as their main research point. This fact allows bookmakers to adjust their odds on the expectation of the average football punter. However, if you have a deeper understanding of a team’s scoring potential can give you a great advantage.

You should also pay attention to more general facts concerning a game. For example, it’s good for you to analyze the behaviour of specific matches, when a particular club is a heavy underdog away from home. Check if they have the tendency to score more than one goal when they play against inferior opponent.
