The renowned bookmaker William Hill has announced that they will ban credit cards for online betting in Ireland from Wednesday 16/2. The most significant bookmakers still accept credit card payments directly in Ireland despite the Irish Safer Gambling Code. Also, it has been reported that some bookies that say that they do not accept credit cards do so indirectly through payment platforms such as Google Pay or Revolut.
How will Irish Bettors Deposit at Bookies?
The head of the Irish Bookmakers Association, which is the authority behind setting the anti-credit card rules in Ireland, mentioned that it doesn’t have the power to control credit cards for gambling activity because the issue has not been outlawed by the Irish Government yet.
At the same time, a new gambling regulator will be introduced in Ireland soon by the local government that would have the power to fine betting companies for breaking the law. However, this authority is not expected to be introduced before the beginning of 2023. Credit card betting has been mentioned as one of the measures that will be outlawed.
Earlier this year, Google and Apple provided Irish betting apps with the possibility to stop credit card betting through payment methods such as Apple Pay and Google Pay. Still, most local betting sites have been ignoring this measure.
