The Danish gambling regulator, Spillemyndigheden, has gotten approval from the City Court to block an extensive list of betting sites. Specifically, it is going to restrict 55 online bookies from operating in its region and it has instructed them to discontinue their business immediately. Since 2012, the regulator has banned a total of 145 bookmakers in order to ensure fairness and legitimacy in the Danish gambling market.
The City Court started investigating all 55 cases in early March of 2021. After it confirmed that Danish bettors are illegally using these betting sites, it has now agreed to proceed with the banning process's next steps. Spillemyndigheden was able to provide the City Court with screenshots that proved that these sportsbooks were actively accepting players from the Danish region without a license.
The Director of the Danish Gambling Authority, Anders Dorph, stated: “The record-high number clearly shows there is a need for a targeted effort, and we will therefore maintain this increased focus in the future.” He added: “One of our most important tasks is to protect players from illegal gambling. At the same time, we must ensure the providers who are licensed to offer games in Denmark can run their business under orderly conditions."
