Spain is known as one of the most relaxed and easy-going countries in the world. Also, the Spanish national team is no stranger to winning World Championships in several most popular sports. It comes as no surprise then that a large number of Spaniards love sports betting, that there are many Spanish betting sites and that their government is pretty lax about it. All forms of gambling have been legal in the country for more than 30 years. However, the market was not regulated until 2011, when the government voted in favor of the Spanish Gambling Act. Today, online bookmakers operating in the country, many of which have the .es domain, need to be licensed by the Spanish regulatory body. Some of the most popular online bookies include Bwin, Bet365, and 888. However, there are also many .com domains that operate legally and accept players from Spain.

Online Betting in Spain - Is It Legal?

aust-150x150Gambling in Spain has been legal for more than 40 years. The first national legislation was brought in 1977 when skill-based gambling activities were legalized in the whole country. After that, in 1981, the Spanish government extended the legality of gambling to games of chance as well, alongside skill-based games.

However, since Spain consists of 17 autonomous regions, the regulation was not uniform until 2011 when the Spanish Gambling Act was finally passed. This act defined the whole legal framework, established the fines for illegal gambling, stipulated the taxes, and named the Spanish regulatory body Direccion General de Ordenación del Juego.

According to the Spanish Gambling Act, only DGOJ can issue licenses to Spanish gambling sites, all of which must bear the .es country domain. Some examples of Spanish bookmakers that have acquired it include William Hill and Interwetten. In order for Spaniards to bet on these websites, they need to be at least 18 years of age.

Any net profits above €2,500 are taxable at 20% for all types of gambling, including different forms of sports betting. At the moment, you can try your luck with 80+ licensed Spanish bookmakers with the .es domain and many other great ones with the .com domain.

Non .es Bookmakers That Accept Spanish Players

Apart from the .es bookmakers, there are also .com bookmakers that accept Spanish players, such as Intertops, Betzest, and Wirwetten. As we have mentioned above, tax on gambling winnings is 20%, which applies both to operators and players. It used to be 25% until 2018, but the government decided to reduce it by 5%, which makes taxation in Spain in line with many other European countries. One of the benefits of playing on .com betting sites in Spain is that you do not have to pay taxes on your winnings. Even if you end up with a lot more in profit than €2,500, you can simply walk away with it.

Another reason why you should consider playing on non-.es websites is convenience. Namely, the Spanish regulatory body (DGOJ) issues separate licenses for casino operators and sports betting operators. Therefore, if a website wants to offer both, they need to obtain two licenses. Because of that, many Spanish websites don’t want to be bothered and instead focus either on one or the other product. On the other hand, .com websites don’t have this problem, so you can freely play slots and place bets on your favorite soccer team. Some great examples are Tigergaming and Betonline.

How to Deposit in Spanish Bookmakers

After the Spanish Gambling Act was passed in 2011, it became a lot easier to fund your account and withdraw money on Spanish betting sites. Basically, you can use any payment method you would normally use to make a purchase online. This includes credit and debit cards such as Visa and MasterCard, eWallets such as Skrill, Neteller, and PayPal, as well as traditional methods such as bank wire transfer. Some sites also accept Teleingresso, which allows players to make deposits using one of the thousands of ATMs on the streets.

New Spanish Betting Sites

Spain is a very attractive and competitive gambling market, which makes it hard for the bookies that operate there to succeed. Every year many new Spanish betting sites pop around like mushrooms, trying to bring some novelties to the table and attract players. Many of them try too hard and fail, but there are always some gems that stand out. For example, Bonkersbet is a good representative of the New Age movement, with lots of Asian handicaps and fast and free of charge payments. Similarly, Reloadbet offers 40,000 prematch events and around 1,000 events on live betting every day. Finally, Totogaming is the best choice for live streaming as there are more than 150 live streams per day, available without depositing.

Where is the Spanish market headed?

As we can see from the recent actions of the Spanish government, they are trying to make gambling more attractive and more accessible to players. The taxes were reduced by 5%, which now makes them lower than in the Netherlands and the Czech Republic. However, compared to the UK or Denmark, they are still quite high, so there is room for improvement. Spain is a very attractive destination for investors since it is a popular holiday destination.

However, the procedures for obtaining licenses are quite complex and extensive. Operators need to obtain individual licenses per product and per region, which is very complicated compared to the UK regulations that are easy to understand and follow. Therefore, in the future, we can hope for the number of operators in the country to increase, the regulations to become even more relaxed, and the taxes to drop a bit more.
