The Duma, the legislative assembly of the Russian Federation, has approved a draft bill that is set to increase taxes on machines and gaming tables.
According to Casino Compendium, a 100% increase will take place in both sectors.
On gaming machines, the tax will go up to 15,000 rubles from 7,500 and on gaming tables, the amount will rise from 125,000 rubles to 250,000.
What's next for Russia?
At this point, we have to mention that the bill is in a draft stage. It will have to pass three more readings in the Duma and after be signed by Russian President, Vladimir Putin to be enacted as law.
As expected, the draft bill has been met with mixed responses from bookmakers and casinos. Summit Ascent Holdings, operator of the Tigre De Cristal casino in Artem, asked if these changes could legally apply in the Russian market.
They stated: “It is too early for the board of directors of the Company to predict whether the above proposed changes will become legally enforceable.”
They also discussed with the Primorsky Government, who regulate the special Gaming Zone in Russia and received guarantees that they intend to keep the taxes in the existing levels.
