The Colombian market is the first regulated market in Latin America starting from October 2016. In recent months, Coljuegos, the gaming regulator of the country, has issued a number of licensees.
Juan B. Perez Hidalgo, president of Coljuegos, revealed that that the organization indents to award “at least two more” licensees.
Speaking to iGaming Business, Hidalgo said: “We won't rest until we end illegal activities in the country”.
Who is Opting for the License?
For this reason, Coljuegos and the Colombian government want more companies to apply for a license, and are actively trying to attract bookmakers from abroad.
In June 2017, Wplay.co secured the first licence and after this, Corredor Empresarial has also rolled out Betplay.com.co.
GAMING1 and Vicca Group have launched Zamba.co, and the domestic operator Colbet acquired its own online gambling license last month.
The Colombian government also published a list with 325 online bookmakers who offered their services without the proper license. Major operators have withdrawn their services and some of them are thinking of making an effort to apply for a license.
At this time only four (4) bookies are licensed in Colombia, but Hidalgo revealed that several more are on the way.
